In Midnight Mansion HD, players take on the role of Jack Malone, a classic game character from games such as Montezuma's Revenge and Pitfall. Like its spiritual predecessors, the game requires skill and fast reflexes to navigate deadly traps, outwit enemies, and unravel puzzles.

The game's gameplay differs from its spiritual predecessor in that the player can influence the environment on a greater scale; clever operation of switches and levers can open doors, cause platforms to move, disengage laser gates, reverse conveyor belt direction, and more. In addition to the usual pitfalls of jumping between platforms, the player must also deal with a variety of different enemies; scorpions run back and forth, falling off edges, birds fly around the screen, spiders dangle from webs, skull-spiders crawl, worms burrow into the ground, and snakes swim.

The player can also grab shields, which act in much the same way as swords did in Montezuma's Revenge, except that they cannot be used on snakes and some other enemies. Players also collect keys that open doors of the same color, as well as video tapes that reveal information on the history of the estate and may provide a solution to a puzzle.

The game comes with 11 original mansions, which vary in theme from underground caverns to mad scientist laboratories to spooky graveyards and old castles. Additionally, there are a number of user-created mansions that can be downloaded and played.
